A Glimpse of Old Paris
Eugène Atget. Carousel. 1923. (Metropolitan Museum of Art.)
Of all the photographers we will ever represent here on Loveheadhouse, none will have made more of an impact on modern photography than Eugène Atget. No matter how many disagreements there are among photographers today, Atget is universally acclaimed.
Giants of modern art such as Picasso, Matisse, Man Ray, and the Surrealists embraced his genius back in the 1920’s. Oddly enough, Atget didn’t originally intend his photographs to be art. His overriding focus was to document the vanishing Paris as urban renewal forever changed the city.
This carousel image perfectly represents the rich tones of his large-format photography and his deep affection for Paris. It’s hard not to feel delight when wearing this photo-t-shirt.
